General Seán MacEoin Memorial

General Seán MacEoin was the leader of the North Longford Flying Column and a hero of the Irish War of Independence. Known as 'The Blacksmith of Ballinalee', he was born in Bunlahy, Granard, County Longford.

It is at the crossroads in Ballinalee where a statue of General MacÉoin stands. Created by sculptor Rory Breslin, the statue is traditional, cast in bronze and stands on a limestone plinth. It depicts MacEoin in his early twenties dressed in military uniform. His head turned to the right towards Clonfin. His right arm is resting on an anvil cast from a mould of the anvil MacEoin would have used in his youth. It is balanced on a block of wood. In his hand is a copy of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921.

Into the limestone plinth is carved the names of the North Longford Flying Column members who participated in the Clonfin ambush.
