Abbott Ireland

Able to trace its origins to1 888, Abbott is a global business serving people in over 150 countries worldwide. It had almost 70,000 employees with revenues of around $22 billion internationally in 2014. The company has been operating in Ireland since 1946 and now has 11 sites and nearly 3,000 employees here. The facility in Longford opened in 2004 and began manufacturing the following year as part of the Abbott Ireland Diagnostics Division.

Abbott aim to advance medical science in order to enable people to live healthier lives. To this end, Abbott Ireland produce a range of innovative diagnostic products helping transform medical diagnosis into a modern diagnostics industry.

In Longford, the facility here was heavily involved in the R&D of ARCHITECT STAT High Sensitive Troponin-I assay, a heart attack diagnostic test which has reduced the time to diagnosis and treatment by several hours compared to the standard tests previously available. This diagnostics test is now manufactured for supply worldwide in the facility here in Longford.

Through their Citizenship strategy, Abbott Ireland provide help with: Science Education Programmes and Scifest to inspire an interest amongst school children in science; participating in several ‘Engineers Ireland’ programmes; the provision of information and support to patients and their carers through collaboration with Patients Associations; safeguarding the environment through the implementation of innovative environmental protection projects; providing a positive and compassionate workplace environment; involvement at local community level to encourage healthcare and wellbeing and the promotion of scientific knowledge through school visits. In 2014, Abbott Ireland employees volunteered over 8,400 hours in local communities through Abbotts Croí an Óir(Heart of Gold) programme.
